Greenwood Park walks for community safety

Local residents, members of the Greenwood Park CPF and local police officers took to the streets at the weekend for a crime awareness walk.

THE Greenwood Park community has reached a milestone in community safety awareness on Saturday, 14 June when residents, community policing forum members and officers took to the streets for the first Greenwood Park SAPS five kilometre fun walk.

At the event, the station commander, Col Mbongeni Mngadi welcomed everyone and thanked them for taking time out their Saturday morning to raise awareness for community safety.

He said it was never more important to have community involvement: “Today signifies an integrated role we as the police and community play in the fight against crime.”

He thanked the CPF members, Durban North/uMhlanga Crisis Team, police officers, Metro Police, residents and sponsors, Coo-ee and Riverside Spar for their involvement in the success of the fun walk.

Host for the day, Brian Daish, the sector four chairman, said the walk was important, because it showed residents what the area looks like: “It is most important when looking at the area that we look at the cleanliness of the areas we walked through. We are trying very hard to clean up the area.”

He asked residents and officers at the event whether they wanted to be a part of the problem, or a part of the solution: “Today’s turnout proves that there are a lot of people who want to be a part of the solution.”

Barry van Wyk, owner of Riverside Spar, thanked Greenwood Park SAPS for taking the initiative to arrange the event: “We have a strong philosophy of community involvement and hope this event will grow from strength to strength.”
