New candidate chosen for Ward 36 by-elections

As Dean Macpherson steps down as the Durban North councillor, Shaun Riley, the DA's new candidate, will be competing for his spot in the by-elections next month.

IN less than two months time, Durban North residents will be taking their community complaints to a new councillor. If the DA, that has run the ward for the past 20 years has its way, that person will be Shaun Riley.

This past weekend saw 28 people registering for the Ward 36 by-election in July as councillor Dean Macpherson takes up his seat in parliament.

Although not there weren’t many new registrations, Macpehrson said in the national and provincial elections more than 5 000 people registered to vote in the same ward.

The new candidate running for the DA position in the July by-election is Shaun Riley. Macpherson announced that a by-election to fill his vacant seat in eThekwini will be held on 2 July 2014.

“The by-election is required in order for voters to choose who the best candidate for Ward 36 will be in terms of the Electoral Act,” Macpherson explained.

“I urge residents of Durban North to vote to keep Durban North in the hands of the DA to ensure effective, transparent and accountable management of ward 36,” he said.
