Mama Luciana’s suspects were ‘looking for a job’

Staff working at Glenore Centre in Glenashley fear another armed robbery.

THE armed men who robbed Mamma Luciana’s restaurant in Glenashley early yesterday morning were “pretending to look for a job”.  The incident occurred at the popular Glenore Centre at about 8am. Capt Thulani Zwane, provincial SAPS spokesman said the duo approached a 36-year-old woman who was in the store at the time.

“While she was busy with them, one of the suspects produced a firearm and threatened to shoot her, demanding cash from her. The suspects took an undisclosed amount of cash before fleeing on foot,” he said.

One of the armed suspects  who was later caught outside Glenashley Primary School had to be pinned down by seven officers after he tried to pull out a firearm in a scuffle with a Blue Security patrol officer.

“His firearm believed to be used during the robbery was recovered. The members also recovered an undisclosed amount of cash that was taken during the robbery,” Zwane said.

A waitress who works at the centre, spoke to the Northglen News under condition of anonymity, said she was concerned that armed suspect may return.  “We are all shaken up by the incident. I’ve spoken to other workers at the centre and they all said these men could have come to any store. Because we get our tips given to us, we’re scared the man may come back or another armed group tries a similar robbery,” she said.

Provincial commissioner Lt General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended the Durban Flying Squad members for their swift response that led to the arrest of the suspect.

“Our members will work tirelessly around the clock to trace the second suspect who is still at large”, she said.
