Armed female hitchhiker robs Samaritan

An alleged female con-artist is operating in the uMhlanga area.

AN armed female hitchhiker acting in tandem with armed accomplices robbed a motorist leaving Gateway of more than R35 000 on Monday night. The motorist pulled up to the woman who stopped him under the pretext of needing a lift.

“When he pulled up alongside the hitchhiker, she pulled out a handgun, while two other men, who were also armed and believed to be her accomplices, jumped in the backseat,” said Durban North SAPS communications officer Lt Raymond Deokaran.

“The motorist was then made to drive for a short distance with the three suspects who took his wallet, cellphone, jewellery and cash amounting to R40 000.”

Deokaran urged residents to be wary of who they give lifts to.

The femme fatale may be linked to a number of robbery cases in the Durban North area from two years ago police said. At the time police warned of a woman clad in black, who pretends to hitchhike but, once in the car, demands money and cellphones.

“The woman in question is Indian, and in the past she would extort money from the men who gave her lifts because she dressed alluringly. She would then threaten to contact their wives. In most cases the men paid her because they were afraid,” he said.
