Domestic waste spills onto local beach

Domestic waste washed out onto Bronze Beach on uMhlanga's promenade on Wednesday.

BRONZE Beach on uMhlanga’s promenade looked more like a rubbish dump on Wednesday when domestic waste washed onto the beach.

It is not clear why domestic waste washed out the storm water pipe at the Hawaan View site, but local councillor, Heinz de Boer  said there could be a number of reasons why the waste washed down the pipe.

“It is very hard for the municipality to establish where the waste came from, but sewage pipes are linked to storm water pipes. If there is an overflow in the sewer system, sewage can flow into storm water pipes as the two are linked,” De Boer said.

He added that the domestic waste could also have been dumped in a drain, which caused it to wash down onto the beach.

“I will get hold of the water department to see if they can establish where this waste came from,” De Boer said.

Although there was no visible sewage on the beach, a white powdery substance could be seen on top of the sand leading from the pipe to the ocean.
