Crusaders tame Tigers in battle of the North

Durban North derby ends in third consecutive victory for the Saders.

THE Nashua Crusaders won their third game on the trot, their second away from home, and recorded a bonus point 28-3 win over Varsity College RFC in their Fidelity Moor Cup clash on Saturday. The Saders staved off a second half onslaught dominated by College in the possession stakes.

The boys from the North opened the scoring as early as the fourth minute with Byron van der Nest on the end of a superb rolling maul. The try was duly converted by flyhalf Cameron Dunlop. They were 14-0 after more good work by the forward back which was finished by centre Willem Rheeder.

Varsity College replied through a penalty to reduce the deficit to 11 points. However, the Saders’ further extended their lead through forward Cameron Dodds, the rolling maul again proving successful, which meant his team went into halftime with the score at 21-3.

The second half was played almost exclusively in the Saders half. But for all their domination of possession the Tigers could only manage two shots at pole, both of the efforts fell short. Aggressive defending also kept College at bay and a rare foray into the opposition half saw the Saders close out the game with 10 minutes to go. Byron van der Nest scoring his second of the game and fifth of the season.

Saders coach Ronnie Uys praised his team for their titanic defending. “We pride ourselves on our defence so to keep College from scoring was a phenomenal effort. I thought the forwards were superb today, they were ably supported by the backs. To secure another five points away from home is great, I can’t argue with that.”
