Crusaders thump UKZN Impi

Nashua Crusaders blow away opposition and win second game on the trot.

IT says a lot about a team’s character and self reflectiveness when they beat a team by more than 50 points but still feel there is room for improvement. This is especially true of the Nashua Crusaders who recorded back to back victories by walloping UKZN Impi 54-19 in the Fidelity Moor Cup premier league last Thursday.

The Saders ran in eight tries to three in an exciting game with hero of the last game Byron van der Nest scoring two of those tries.

The men from the North opened the scoring through explosive winger Troy Chiocchetti and ran in a further four unanswered tries to take a 35-0 lead going into the half time break.

The second half saw the Impi attempt to mount some opposition and they started off the more positive scoring twice in the opening minutes of the second half. Ultimately though, it was the Crusaders who closed out the game, fullback Armand Botha with the pick of the three tries scored in the second half after a wonderful weaving run had defenders not knowing which way to turn.

Coach Ronnie Uys said he was proud of the boys winning away from home but demanded more from them. “There were periods in that game where we switched off and allowed them back into the game. Our target was to get the five points away from home and we did that.

“I still feel we are not playing to our potential, I would say the performance today was at 70 percent. If we want to be champions we have to be more ruthless,” he said.
