THERE is still uncertainty over alleged police involvement in an armed gang that terrorised parts of Durban North on Sunday. Yesterday four men, two of whom are allegedly police officers, were arrested after a high speed car chase on the N2 freeway which ended in a crash on Queen Nandi Drive.
The vehicle used by the suspects, a silver Mercedes Benz thought to be fitted with a false registration plate, was hijacked in Bayview last month and police recovered housebreak-in implements and stolen property inside the vehicle.
Police radios and reflective jackets and a R5 magazine with four live rounds of ammunition were also recovered. The four men aged between 20 and 25 were charged with housebreak-in, possession of suspected stolen property, possession of ammunition and car hijacking yesterday.
While a member from the KZN media SAPS centre said it was still unknown at this point whether the suspects are actual police officers, their official spokesman, Jay Naicker told the Northglen News there was “no police involvement”.
However, Naicker’s superior, KwaZulu-Natal provincial commissioner, Lt General Mmamonnye Ngobeni said: “We will do everything within our powers to ensure that these criminals are brought to book and face the full might of the law. The issue with the reflective jackets and police radios will be thoroughly investigated and those responsible for issuing the police equipment to the suspects will be dealt with accordingly.”
The silver Mercedes Benz is allegedly the same vehicle used in two house break-ins (Earlswood Place and Inverness Crescent) and an attempted house robbery in St Andrews Drive.
