Northlands BC to host disabled bowls champs

The championships are held annually in different cities around the country and were last held in Durban in 2006.

THE South African National Championships for Disabled Bowlers will take place daily at Northlands, Durban and Sherwood bowling clubs in Durban from 4 to 10 May 2014.

The championships are held annually in different cities around the country and were last held in Durban in 2006. Players range from those who are totally or partially blind to those who are sighted but physically disabled and their skill and determination to overcome their handicap has to be seen to be appreciated. Blind bowlers are assisted by sighted directors who are the “eyes” of the bowler, giving details of the play and assisting the bowler to make the correct delivery,

Physically disabled persons include wheelchair players and the bowlers are placed in different categories according to their degree of vision, or physical handicap.

The skill of some of these blind bowlers is the envy of many sighted club bowlers.

Preliminary rounds are played at the three clubs during the week with finals played for gold, silver and bronze medals all day on Saturday, 10 May at Northlands bowling club, Margaret Maytom Avenue.
