Businessman fights off attackers

A local businessman caught three robbers in the act of trying to break into his business in Athlone.

A LOCAL businessman fought for his life when he caught three robbers in the act trying to break into his business premises. The Athlone businessman was held up by three armed men when he was on his way to open his shop for the day late last week.

“The complainant said he was on his way to open up his business when he saw two unknown men at the front door. He also saw a third man trying to smash the company’s main door,” said Lt Elvis Naidoo, spokesman for Greenwood Park SAPS.

According to the police, the businessman then shouted at the men, asking them what they were doing. “One of the men then pulled out a screwdriver, demanding cash from the businessman. The businessman then tried to run from the robbers, but two of them caught him and started assaulting him. The robber that had the screwdriver then tried to stab the businessman, but luckily he managed to fight him off,” Lt Naidoo added.

Amidst the ordeal, the other two robbers managed to make their way into the business and stole an undisclosed amount of cash, three cellphones and a flatscreen TV. The robbers then fled in a BMW and a Hyundai.

“The businessman sustained injuries to his arm and no shots were fired. No one has been arrested yet,” Lt Naidoo said.
