Lack of road markings angers residents

Municipality resurface road but fail to remove a chunk of concrete slab and fail to properly mark the road.

FRUSTRATION and shoddy road workmanship are two things uMgeni Park residents are experiencing. This because the municipality has failed to paint a stop sign and cut back trees that have obscured two other stop poles at a busy intersection.

Brian Daish, chairman of the Community Policing Forum (sector four Greenwood Park), said he’s been trying for weeks to get the municipality to act over the lack of road markings at the intersection of Anthony and Browns Drift Road.

“We’ve already had a serious accident where a local resident failed to stop at the intersection because of the lack of the painted sign on the road’s surface. Luckily she escaped injury but if no action is taken there could be further accidents.”

Daish added part of the road was recently resurfaced but the municipality has failed to remove a huge chunk of concrete slab which is left on the side of the pavement. What’s more they have failed to properly mark the road.

“The intersection is a nightmare, there are no visible markers for motorists to notice that it is a stop street. We’ve had some close calls at this junction, people come flying down the road and don’t notice that it is a stop street.

“I’m not in a unique position here, I am sure other residents feel the same way, but to leave the road in its current state is just ridiculous.

“What’s compounded the problem is that two of the stop signs on the lollipop poles are obscured by overhanging branches. I’ve contacted the parks department to cut them back but the resultant outcome was no action,” he said.
