Armed gang terrorise Effingham businesses

Armed gang make off with R66 800 in two robberies just minutes apart.

FOUR men wielding R5 assault rifles robbed two businesses in Effingham just minutes apart and robbed them collectively of more than R60 000 on Monday. This followed a hijacking a day earlier at the same business centre.

The armed gang stormed the first business, called Club Rest U Rant, and made off with airtime and R1 800 from the cash register.  They then proceeded to an action bar behind the restaurant. According to Lt Elvis Naidoo, Greenwood Park SAPS spokesman, one of the suspects followed the owner of the establishment into the bathroom. The suspect then levelled his weapon at the owner and threatened his life.

“The owner was ordered to open the safe and the suspects made off with R65 000. We have appointed a task team to deal with these business robberies.” he said.

Naidoo added the suspects were using a black Audi with false NPN registration plates. There was a hijacking outside the same business Centre on Sunday where a BMW was hijacked and later recovered in Claremont.

No arrests have yet been made and the gun wielding gang are still at large.
