New pier for Virginia Beach

Virginia Beach new look could be boost to local economy.

THE decision to extend the Virginia Beach culvert is just the first phase of development set for the area. A new pier, the re-tarring of roads and the possibility of restaurants straddling the shore are all in the pipeline. That’s according to Durban North councillor, Dean Macpherson.

The extension project worth R12-million is the second phase of the Virginia circle detention pond which will see excess flood water move more easily under the Virginia Airport and out to sea.

Previously the existing culvert on the beach would become blocked with sea sand and resulted in costly floods.

“The culvert will be extended by approximately 50m out to sea using concrete structures similar to that already in place. The extension will place the outfall discharge point away from the shoreline to assist in the prevention of marine sediment (namely beach sand) build up in the outfall exit,” explained Macpherson.

“My vision is to see the entire Virginia beach re-developed with restaurants, parking and play areas for children. Plans have already been submitted with a completed EIA with the councillors’ approval.

“Such a development is key for Durban North and will allow residents to once again freely use the beach as well as being an attraction for tourists. We also cannot overlook the job creation component that will encompass this project,” he said.
