Win tickets to see UK opera star live in Durban

Bryn Terfel will perform in the Durban City Hall on 9 May.

THE UK’s top opera star is heading to Durban for one performance only. The acclaimed Welsh bass-baritone Bryn Terfel will perform for one recital in the Durban City Hall on Friday 9 May as part of his South African tour next month.

He will appear with internationally recognised South African pianist, Nina Schumann, as his accompanist.

Terfel is hailed as Britain’s greatest singing sensation and together with Schumann will perform an enticing programme of music spanning three centuries, opening with Rodgers & Hammerstein’s evergreen hit, Some Enchanted Evening from South Pacific and including a group of famous operatic scenes titled Bad Boys of Opera, some much loved Celtic songs such as Danny Boy and Loch Lomond, and a wealth of other songs.

A major recording star, Bryn Terfel is a towering presence in the international music world.

Whether in the fields of opera, oratorio, art song, musical theatre or popular song, both live and recorded, his powerhouse combination of a great voice, superb diction, a commanding stage presence and supercharged acting skills have seen the singer triumphing as one of the world’s hottest property artists for more than two decades.

The New York Philharmonic’s gala performances of Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd at New York’s Avery Fisher Hall last month with Terfel in the title role and Emma Thompson returning to the stage after many years as Mrs Lovett, dubious baker of pies, brought the house down. Terfel also performs and records his beloved Welsh folk songs.

Terfel’s Durban recital starts at 7.30pm. Tickets at R350 and R420 and are available now from Computicket on 0861 915 8000. Early booking is advised.
