Burials on track despite mortuary staff strike

The Department of Health gives its assurance that bereaved families can still bury their loved ones despite a province wide strike by mortuary workers.

THE KZN Department of Health has assured bereaved families that they have put measures in place to ensure that they can still bury their dead loved ones. This despite a strike by its staff.

The department’s Forensic Pathology Services downed tools on Monday. The strike is said to have affected post-mortems and the identification of bodies.In a statement the MEC for health in KZN Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo said “As a department we have now put measures in place to ensure that bereaved families are able to bury their loved ones as per schedule.”

The striking mortuary workers are demanding amongst other things, that they the department equips them  proper protective gear, such as masks and gloves.
