UPDATE: Police vow to arrest officer’s killer

Police reported that a local police officer was shot and killed in uMngeni Park.

CHARGES of murder, house robbery and inquest are being investigated by Greenwood Park SAPS.

On 14 March at approximately 8. 30am, members of Greenwood Park SAPS responded to a house robbery complaint at Riverside Road, uMngeni Park, Durban.  It is alleged that a domestic worker and a gardener were accosted by two armed robbers and were tied up.

While the robbers were at the scene, a 48-year-old police officer stationed at Greenwood Park SAPS entered the house and the robbers shot him. The police officer retaliated and fatally shot one suspect. The second robber fled the scene on foot and is still being sought by police. The policeman died as a result of his injuries.

The provincial commissioner of police in KwaZulu-Natal, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, extended her condolences to the family of deceased Captain.

“We are shocked that yet another one of  our police members has died at the hands of ruthless criminals. We will not rest until the outstanding suspect is arrested and brought to book,” she said.

IT’S been an emotional and tragic morning for Greenwood Park SAPS as it was reported that a Greenwood Park Police Station officer was shot and killed in an armed robbery in uMngeni Park this morning.

Reports indicate one of the armed robbers was also shot and killed in the shootout.

Exact details are still to be confirmed by SAPS. The officer cannot be named as his family has not yet been informed of his death.
