Danville victorious at regional hockey tourney

In a tightly contested Durban North Regional hockey tournament, Danville walk away champs.

EIGHT teams took to the fields in the SPAR KZN Regional Hockey Tournament on Saturday, with Danville Park Girls’ High School, taking the honours after a long day on the pitch.

In a tightly contested Durban North Regional, Danville finished the tournament with a mere one point clear of defending champions, Ashton International School. Danville finished on 16 points and Ashton on 15 points.

In the round robin game, Danville lost to Ashton 1-0 but Danville managed to win more games in the rest of the tournament while Ashton drew three of their seven games and didn’t concede a goal in all of their games.

Danville concluded their day with five wins, one draw and one loss.  They will now be making their second appearance at the final, having advanced to the finals in 2012.

Calvin Price, coach of the victorious team proudly stated after the tournament, “We have a young eager team this year, full of talent, with only three girls in matric. I am extremely proud of them and very surprised that we managed to get the win. But I am delighted that we are going through to the finals. This is a great start to our outdoor season.”

Crawford College La Lucia came a well-deserved third while host school, Our Lady of Fatima and Durban North College both finished with seven points each.
