Toddler killed by illegal electricity connection

A two-year-old toddler's life was taken by illegal electricity connections.

A LITTLE two-year-old boy will never be able to enjoy the summer sun and playing outside his home again thanks to illegal electricity connections.

Like any other toddler, the two-year-old boy was playing outside his home in Kenville informal settlement when he was electrocuted by a live wire that formed part of an illegal electricity connection.

The increased illegal electricity connections at local informal settlements have claimed two lives in the last month.

According to Lt Elvis Naidoo, spokesman for Greenwood Park SAPS, a two-year-old boy and a 25-year-old man were electrocuted in Kenville in two separate incidents.

“Greenwood Park Police Station officers were called to the scene at 11am on Thursday 27 February where a two-year-old toddler was electrocuted in Triumph Road,” he said.

It is believed the toddler was playing when he stepped on a live wire and was electrocuted.

“Another man died about two weeks ago. Circumstances surrounding his death have not yet been established,” Lt Naidoo added.

He said Greenwood Park Police Station does regular awareness campaigns, in conjunction with eThekwini Municipality’s Electricity Department, at local informal settlements to warn residents of the dangers of illegal electricity connections.

“We’ve been very proactive when it comes to informing residents of the dangers of illegal electricity connections, but often these warnings fall on deaf ears because electricity is a basic need,” he said.
