THIS week Northglen News gets to know South African singing sensation, Matthew Mole, just after his stint at Live – The Venue came to an end.

Singer/songwriter, Matthew Mole, made South African chart history by becoming the first local artist to enter the iTunes album chart at number one with his debut album, The Home We Built.

Media reports said the 21 year old from Fish Hoek, Cape Town beat international superstars Jay Z, The Rolling Stones, Michael Buble and Robin Thicke, local DJ/producer DJ Kent as well as the world’s biggest compilation series NOW That’s What I Call Music to top the chart.

What things do you like doing, besides music? Name two.

Besides music? Bowling and illustration.

Tell us about a time when things didn’t go the way you wanted?

I was bowling with my friends once and I came last. But only once.

What do you think about when you are alone in your car?

Most of the time I am singing super loudly to whatever music is playing, so not much thinking happens while I drive.

What’s your strongest memory of your childhood?

Lots of teasing my sister. And lots of swimming at my gran’s house.

What do you dislike about South Africa?

Probably a load of things. But I try not to think about the things that I dislike about my home, because it’s such a rad place to live in.

What makes you angry?

Assumptions that are made without any real look into it.

Besides your job, what are you most passionate about?

Friends and family. As cheesy as that sounds. But if I didn’t have such love and support in my life, it would be depressing.

Name one misconception you think people have about you?

People always think I’m high! It’s actually quite funny. But I promise you, I am never high.

Some advice to people who want to follow your path; what are three things you should never do in this business?

Persistence is super important. Meeting lots of people too. It’s rad making friends in the industry. Getting your songs heard. It’s super easy these days with all of the social networks we have.

What do you envision yourself doing when you turn 80?

Sitting down with my friends talking about our wives, playing Flight Simulator and doing the lottery.
