Security officers recover hijacked vehicle

Two security officers recovered a hijacked vehicle in Umgeni Road on Tuesday.

UMGENI Road was the scene of an attempted hijacking and a confirmed hijacking during peak hour traffic on Tuesday, 11 February.

However, two quick thinking Chubb Fire and Security personnel thwarted the attempts of a second hijacking and recovered the stolen luxury vehicle belonging to a motorist.

The attempted hijacking took place at 8.33am on Tuesday, 11 February. The victim, a woman, was at the intersection of Umgeni Road and St Mathias Road, when two men held her up.

Chubb sub-contractor, Riaan Botha, witnessed the incident and alerted the control room. The police were also called. Security guards then drove to the premises where they were informed by the staff that the company’s managing director had been hijacked minutes earlier and the vehicle was being tracked to Indus Lane, Springfield.

Despite following the route pointed out, the suspects were nowhere to bee seen. Minutes after responding to that hijacking incident, security personnel where alerted to a hijacking incident at 1277 Umgeni Road.

The abandoned Mercedes Benz was recovered. Both suspects had fled on foot with the client’s belongings.

Durban Central SAPS arrived soon thereafter and a search of the area began.

It is believed the two suspects were involved in both incidents, however, no arrests have been made.
