Dolphins clinch T20 silverware

The Sunfoil Dolphins secured their first domest title in eight years in the final of the Ram Slam T20 competition in Cape Town.

IT’S been almost a decade since KZN cricket has seen domestic silverware, but the Sunfoil Dolphins ended that drought on Sunday with a stunning two run win in the final of the Ram Slam T20 competition.

The Dolphins batted first against defending champs the Cape Cobras, and posted a total of 146 for eight in their innings. Dolphins skipper Morne Van Wyk top-scored with 47, while Jacques Kallis was the pick of the Cobras bowlers with 4 for 26 from his three overs.

The home side however got off to the worst start losing four wickets early on and eventually fell just short as they made 144 for seven from their 20 overs.

Stiaan van Zyl (46) and Sybrand Engelbrecht (56) put on a 91-run fifth wicket partnership, but it wasn’t enough as the hosts fell just shy of their target. Kyle Abbott was the pick of the Dolphins bowlers with a miserly 2 for 17 from his four overs.

Quick stats

The last time the Dolphins lifted some silverware was in the 2005/2006 season when they shared the four day competition with the Titans.

To put it into perspective the last time the Dolphins won, current coach Lance Klusener was their captain.

Cape Cobras speedster Beuran Hendricks ended as the Ram Slam T20 leading wicket-taker with 28 wickets.

David Miller ended as the tournament as leading run-scorer with 383 runs four half-centuries to his name. Miller had a highest score of 93 not out.
