Garth’s new two-wheeled mission takes an oval shape

Local adventurer plans to become first man to cycle to all 15 Super Rugby stadiums.

‘THE purpose of life is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience’ (Eleanor Roosevelt). It’s a saying that best sums up intrepid explorer Garth Lezard who is now attempting his newest venture. He recently returned from cycling around Fiji, Samoa, New Zealand and Australia where he raised funds for the Leonard Cheshire Home.

“When I started mapping out which routes to take in Australia and New Zealand, I thought about a new aspect to raise money for charity by visiting the different Super Rugby teams. Along the way, I started collecting memorabilia from the Super Rugby teams and then selling raffle tickets for the items as I stopped over in various towns along the route,” he said.

Garth has also been taking photographs and interviewing coaches and players, so he can document his journey and produce a product at the end of his three and a half year mission, that he hopes will be inspiring.

“There have been many around the world cycling adventures completed, but I want to be the first Super Rugby fan to be recognised as having cycled through all 15 Super Rugby teams in the world.

“I’m now hoping to cycle through to every South African Super Rugby venue starting with my home team and Currie Cup champions.

“The biggest aspect of this trip is Leonard Cheshire. I was extremely saddened when Tata Madiba passed away and I took solace in something Desmond Tutu said, which was not wanting concrete structures to commemorate Madiba’s legacy but rather people to be living memorials to what he achieved. I hope this new venture will be one way to do that,” he said.

One thing’s for sure it is going to take more than punctures and dangerous drivers to put this intrepid traveller off completing his world cycling expedition. If you would like to get involved in Garth’s adventure email garthlezard@hotmail.com
