uMhlanga armed robber arrested

25-year-old arrested after an armed robbery at the Total Garage in uMhlanga.

DURBAN North SAPS arrested a 25-year-old man for his part in an armed robbery of the Total service station (Jubilee Grove) near Gateway Mall. Police also seized a 9mm firearm that was allegedly used during the robbery.

Provincial spokesman, Col Jay Naicker said three suspects pretended to be patrons at the service station, robbed staff of an undisclosed amount of cash at gunpoint around 2.30pm on Friday (31 January).

“No shots were fired and the suspects fled on foot. Some of the petrol attendants chased at the armed robbers and when police arrived they were pointed the direction of the suspects who had ran into the bushes. Police arrested one suspect. The cash was not recovered and the suspect was found in possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition. He will be charged for business robbery and will appear in Verulam Magistrates’ Court soon. The seized firearm will be sent to ballistics to ascertain whether it was used in the commission of any other crime in the country,” he said.

The provincial commissioner of KZN Lt General Mmamonnye Ngobeni said she was delighted with the alert members who swiftly responded to the incident. She commended the good work done by the members and the braveness of the service station employees who managed to chase the armed men without fear. “The arrest of the two outstanding suspects is imminent and we hope that the arrested suspect will be prosecuted and given a harsh sentence,” she said.
