SA wins silver medal

SA tops medal table at the Kofukan Shito Ryu World Karate Championships recently.

THE Kofukan Shito Ryu World Karate Championships were held in Durban recently with various affiliated countries competing, including teams from England, Norway, Sweden and Portugal to name a few.

South Africa as hosts, topped the medals board with the highlight being the senior team Kumite event where South Africa, competed against the highly rated Botswana team in the final event. Botswana were the newly crowned world champions with the silver medal going to South Africa.

“I am extremely proud of the boys,” said president and chief instructor of Kofukan South Africa, sensei Mike Norman.

“This is such a young team and relatively inexperienced at this level. The Botswana team being virtually their actual all-styles national team, our young team had their work cut out for them, but did themselves proud,” he said.

In addition to the achievement of the senior Kumite team, the national team bagged 27 gold medals, 41 silver medals and 36 bronze medals.
