Local lads shine at national sailing championship

All the action from the SA national youth sailing champs held at Midmar Dam.

THE MSC South African Sailing national youth sailing championships was held at Midmar Dam over the December holidays with more than 150 entries competing in a range of different boat classes.

Wind during the event was generally light, with overcast and cool conditions on most days. The biggest class was the Optimists, with 39 entries (up to age 15, both boys and girls) from all over the country.

There were four Durban sailors in this class, with Benji Daniel placing third while Durban North’s Liam Fennessy managed a creditable 10th place overall. This result meant Liam was selected as part of the team of 10 boys and girls representing South Africa in the African Optimist champs in Morocco later this year.

Liam was also part of the KZN Optimist team (together with Benji, Calum Gaughran and Taalia Naidoo) which ended second in the team racing event behind the Western Cape, and ahead of the Northern Region and Eastern Cape teams.

Other Durban North sailors who did well were Chad Stevenson (first RS Tera Pro), Dylan Albert (fourth RS Tera Pro), Ozwen Chetty (sixth RS Tera Sport), Sven Paton (seventh RS Tera Sport), Jessica Albert (10th RS Tera Sport), Michael McNeill (third Laser Radial), and Rudi and Hannah Fokkens (eight place in the two-person Hobie 16 catamaran class).
