Restriction of beach access route rejected

Local councillor says he stands resolute with Fairway residents to oppose any restriction of beach access route for Beachwood housing development.

WHEN the plan to build 19 houses on a portion of Beachwood Golf Course was proposed, it was was met with vehement opposition from local residents.

Residents questioned whether the development would allow for more houses than the proposed 19. The concerns focused largely on whether the interests of Fairway residents were being kept at heart. The proposed restriction of the public access route, Beachwood Close, was also a worrying factor. The only other access point is 800m north of the development.

At a report back meeting recently, residents were informed of an application to close the road for the development to go ahead. DA ward councillor, Dean Macpherson, said both he and residents alike would fight any attempt to close the road.

“I am not against development, but what I would like to see is a solution that benefits the residents of Durban North and to ensure the correct procedures are followed. Everyone understands the development will go ahead but we’ve taken a unanimous decision to reject any closure of Beachwood Close,” Macpherson said.

Mick Hyatt, a member of the Durban Country Club trust, said the trust was in the process of submitting an application to restrict access, but insisted the route would not be closed completely.
