Dave wins waste management award

Local resident, Dave Pietersen, wins waste management award.

THE KwaZulu-Natal Branch of the Institute of Waste Management of Southern Africa (IWMSA) awarded local resident, Dave Pietersen, with the IWMSA’s chairman’s award recently.

Dave was employed by eThekwini Municipality and Durban Solid Waste since the early 90s as manager of operations, starting off with the borough of uMhlanga

till October 2012 when he retired.

“I have been involved with the Institute of Waste management all the years and have been involved with the KZN recycling forum for many years. I’ve also hosted IWMSA’s golf day for the past 15 years and I am already planning for next year at the Royal Durban golf club,” Dave said.

A floating trophy has also been baring Dave’s name since he sponsored it 15 years ago.

IWMSA called for submissions for the chairman’s award earlier this year. The branch was looking to identify individuals and organisations that are actively engaged in worthwhile projects/endeavours that further the goals and objectives of the IWMSA.

“Dave is a long standing member of the IWMSA. We are grateful for the dedicated service that he has displayed in assisting the branch to organise and run marketing events and for instance with the annual KZN IWMSA golf day. Through Dave’s dedication and commitment, the branch has benefitted from his service which he has continued to give so generously of even from retirement,” said IWMSA chairman, Aubrey Muswema.

Since Dave’s retired, he opened his own waste consultancy business in uMhlanga and he hopes to also establish a local recycling forum.
