See Durban through Tyler’s eyes

DURBAN North photographer, 19-year-old Tyler Walker, hosts his first photographic exhibition at Upstairs, above Spiga in Florida Road on Tuesday 10 December at 6pm. The exhibition will be open for the next week afterwards. Entry is free.

Born and raised in Durban North, Tyler won a scholarship for swimming at Westville Boys’ High School, where he trained with South Africa’s golden boy, Chad Le Clos.

It was Westville Boys’ High School that instilled a love for photography in Tyler, who started a media company with his uncle, Brad Coucom, in his Grade 11 year.

“It was my uncle that ultimately set me up with all the equipment,” he said.

One of Tyler’s first projects was with skating brand, Peg. Today, Tyler does photography for Varsity College, Peg, Red Bull and also works for his church in Morningside.

A true water baby, Tyler enjoys taking photos involving water. “I love water, surfing and the ocean, but I would like to branch out a little more with my photography.”

For Tyler, photography captures a moment in time, “I love that I can freeze a moment in time and re-create it. I get to express how I see things,” he said.

His exhibition, titled Our Home in Colour, which he also shares with two mates, Dylan Royal and Campbell Colledge, is centred around Durban.

“I love Durban way too much. This exhibition is basically an exhibition to glorify Durban. People put Durban down quite a lot and I want to bring out another side of Durban. I want to expose spots and places people wouldn’t really see,” he said.

To see a glimpse of what’s on offer at the exhibition, follow Tyler (@bigredphotography), Campbell (@campbell_colledge) and Dylan (@d_oyal) on Instagram. The photos on display will also be on sale.
