Lucky escape after rock throwing incident

Municipality must be held responsible says local councillor.

A MOTORIST was the target of another rock throwing incident on the N2 Blackburn Bridge, near uMhlanga last Friday (1 November). Debbie Macpherson, stepmom of Durban North councillor Dean Macpherson, was driving from the King Shaka Airport at about 11am when she saw objects being flung towards her car.

Incredibly the Mt Edgecombe resident escaped serious injury as the objects smashed into her windscreen. Ward councillor Dean Macpherson said his stepmom was aware of previous incidents on the bridge and kept driving, instead of stopping. “The municipality made a public commitment last year to enclose the Blackburn Bridge. How long will it take before anything is done? Does there have to be another fatality before any action is taken?” he said.

Last year the South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) said they were looking at the design to incorporate a closure of a pedestrian screen at the bridge to stop criminals from throwing rocks and heavy objects on the highway below.

But Macpherson is adamant the resposibility lies with the municipality. “Sanral didn’t build the bridge, the municipality did. This is a classic case of the municipality saying one thing and not following through,” he said.
