MEMBERS of Green Education Equals Knowledge and Know how (G.E.E.K), a locally founded non-profit-organisation, took their dogs and cats project into Waterloo Primary School, close to Verulam, where school children learnt more about animals and superstitions.

Pupils ranging from Grade R to Grade 7 were participating in the educational programme that covered topics from veterinary care of their domestic animals to animal behavior and superstitions. Dr Rourke Crosson, Brenda Wepener, Nontokozo Nzama and Bongani Ngcamu, the event’s facilitators, taught the children about animals in a fun and educational manner.

The project was well received and the children were able to interact with three dogs, Gypsy, Orphan Annie (a rescue from Project Dog) and Severes. The children were able to touch the animals, learnt what to do if they saw a stray and heard Severes’ strong heartbeat.

During the presentation the pupils were assessed as to who asked the most and best questions and there was an one outstanding pupil, Sifundo Prince (Grade 7), who won the hamper for his dog at home.

The other pupils were all given leads, collars, dog treats and bowls for their animals at home supplied by Pam Naude.

If a child is able to understand their role as a pet owner they can learn compassion, empathy, responsibility and love and make them an overall better adult.
