Major drug bust at airport

Police arrest two suspects at King Shaka International Airport for being in possession of R6.5-million worth of drugs.

FOLLOWING a directive from the Provincial Commissioner to identify individuals that are supplying drugs to drug dealers in KwaZulu-Natal, the Durban Organised Crime Unit has made has several arrests of key individuals in the drug trade.

On Tuesday 22 October, the Organised Crime Unit and customs’ officials at King Shaka International Airport arrested two suspects, aged 28 and 29, who were in possession of drugs after they landed on a flight from India at 8pm.

Police and customs had profiled the couple, who were on a flight coming from India to Durban, that were in possession of drugs. Both suspects were intercepted and their luggage was searched.

Police found 36kgs of crystal methamphetamine with a street value of about R6.5-million in their luggage.

In a follow-up operation a 36-year-old woman was arrested last night (Tuesday) at the Point area in Durban as she awaited delivery of the drugs. All three suspects are in custody for dealing in drugs pending further investigation. They will appear in court soon.

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, commended members of the Durban Organised Crime Unit and customs for the breakthrough.

“I am glad that months of hard work and patience has paid off. I am delighted that we are now able to reach those that are on the very top of this vicious chain that destroys the youth of our Province,” she said.
