Bike thieves caught red-handed

TWO motorbike thieves were caught in the act of stealing a motorbike on North Coast Road at the weekend.

On Saturday 12 October at about 12.10am, Durban Flying Squad officers were doing their normal patrol duties preventing crime around Greenwood Park when the saw two suspects loading a stolen motorbike into an Isuzu bakkie on North Coast Road.

The officers approached the men who, according to the officers, fled the scene using their Isuzu bakkie, with the motorbike on the back.

According to the Provincial SAPS offices, the officers started chasing the men, who were driving recklessly and disregarding traffic lights.

It is alleged that while the suspects were fleeing, they were firing shots at the police who returned fire.

The suspects left their vehicle and fled on foot.

The members continued chasing the suspects and eventually caught and arrested them.

One suspect sustained a gunshot wound to his left leg and was taken to hospital under police guard.

Both suspects, aged 25 and 31, were charged with theft of a motor vehicle and the driver with an additional charge of reckless and negligent driving.

They are expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court soon.
