Travis slalom’s to personal best

Northglen News speaks to local waterskier, Travis Fisher who recently returned from the US.

THE King ‘Fisher’, ‘Fisher’-men, names you associate with being adept at fishing, but also being comfortable with the element of water. It’s no wonder with a surname like Fisher, brothers Travis and Jared, also have something to do with watersports.

The duo recently competed at the John Meyer Memorial Waterski Championships and the World U21 Waterski Champs in Florida. Northglen News caught up with Travis to find out how the team fared in the US. Currently a Grade 12 pupil at Crawford College, La Lucia, Travis said he had to juggle studying for his final exams and preparing for the champs.

“It’s not been easy, but my school has been extremely understanding. It’s always an honour to represent your country on a global stage and I’m grateful for the opportunity,” he said.

The 18-year-old excelled in US conditions and recorded a personal best at the John Meyer Memorial, and finished second, notching up a personal best of one buoy at 11,25?m at 58 km/h.

“It’s always fantastic to achieve a personal best, not many South African waterskiers have made this score,” he enthused.

Though he fell early in the U21 champs, Travis has now qualified for his open national waterskiing colours.
