Acutt Avenue dumping situation worsens

Ward councillor Dean Macpherson says the dumping on Acutt Avenue is a health and safety hazard.

Northglen News visited the illegal dump site with Macpherson last week and found the area strewn with plastic pieces, metal filings, polystyrene, paper and a refrigirator door.

Illegal dumping has been a persistent problem on Acutt Avenue and Macpherson said the situation cannot be allowed to continue. “Firstly, it’s a health hazard, with all the metal filings, motorists are in danger of having punctures. It’s become a haven of illegal activity. Just today we’ve witnessed scrap dealers strip some of the items dumped on the pavement and the pile of rubbish seems to be expanding.

“What is particular displeasing is the fact that the Malacca Road dump isn’t far away,” he said. Macpherson added businesses on Acutt Avenue had also contacted him saying the dumping was affecting businesses. “Despite repeated calls and correspondances to Logan Naicker from DSW to adress the problem, there has been no action.” He urged residents who see anyone illegally dumping to contact DSW on 031 311 8804.

Hilary Augustus who works opposite the illegal dump echoed Macpherson’s sentiments and added her emails to DSW had also gone unanswered.
