Rogue government workers warning

IT is by no means a new scam, but the Durban North SAPS has warned residents to be aware of a trio of women posing as department of labour workers who are operating in the North Durban area.

Northglen News has been contacted by one concerned resident whose house was targeted last weeks.

Glenashley resident, Yogesh Naidoo, said three women, travelling in a white GP regsitration car (make unknown), who claim to be from the department of labour, tried to gain access to his property.

“The women attempted to convince first my security guard, and then my wife, that they were from the department of labour, and they wish to inspect my home. My wife chatted to them without opening the main gate, and they tried every means to convince her that they wanted to conduct an inspection. I contacted the Durban North Police Station and reported the incident,” he said.

Naidoo asked residents in the area to be cautious and alert and to contact the SAPS immediately. Department of labour KZN spokesman, Nhlanhla Khumalo, said the women did not work for the department.

“Firstly, we don’t operate like this and all our workers carry identity cards. It is definitely not protocol to call after-hours or to make house inspections,” Khumalo said.

Durban North SAPS spokesman, Lt Raymond Deokaran, concurred with Khumalo saying the public were well within their rights to ask for identity to be shown.

“If they are legitimate then it shouldn’t be a problem. I warn people to be aware of these type of scams and to note specifics of the vehicle, for example, the license plate number and the make and colour of the car where possible,” he said.
