Riverside women crowned KZN’s best

Zimbabwean international and Riverside Women's captain, Wendy Snelling laudes her teammates over title success.

A GREAT team is a team with no weak areas. It’s a quote that best sums up the triumph of the Riverside Hockey Club women’s team who retained their KZN Super League title for the second successive year recently.

Just ask Sunningdale resident and stand in captain, Wendy Snelling. The Zimbabwean international lauded her teammates who beat Kearsney 2-1 in the final game of the season, which meant both the Durban North club and Collegians were tied in first place on 13 points. It came down to goal difference in the end with Riverside taking top honours in the league with a better goal difference of one.

”This title is shared equally between every single player in our ladies 1’s team, we are a side that play for each other and the love of the game. Each individual knew their role on the field, and went out and performed to their very best. It was truly an honour to lead such a fantastic group of enthusiastic sportswomen. A big acknowledgement and thank-you must also go to Karl Bresler who for two years running, has coached us into victory.

“We are absolutely thrilled, it’s been a competitive season and it’s down to the commitment and heart from every single player on the team,” Snelling said.

What makes this feat even more remarkable is they lost last year’s captain, Emma Bray, to injury and then replacement captain Cindy Hack halfway through the season.

“Both Emma and Cindy were invaluable to our success. I feel I just finished off their hard work,” she said.

The league win is another accolade for the club, as the men’s team retained their Super League crown earlier this year.
