Greenwood SAPS target druggies

Greenwood Park Police Station continues its fight against crime in local informal settlements.

GREENWOOD Park Police station officers raided the Havlock informal settlement in Greenwood Park last week due to an increase of drug and alcohol related abuse.

During the raid which targeted illegal shebeens, taverns and known drug dealer’s homes, the police recovered dagga and confiscated and destroyed illegally made liquor.

“The operation, driven by the visible policing head, Cap James Becker, was a huge success. It was intelligence driven and we targeted homes we knew may have drugs in,” said Greenwood Park SAPS spokesman, Lt Elvis Naidoo.

He added the operation will be ongoing, adding other informal settlements will also be searched.

“We’ve found that criminals sell a lot of stolen goods to residents in informal settlements. While the majority of the residents are law abiding citizens, there are a few residents that use the informal settlements as a base for their criminal activity,” Naidoo said.

He said there’s also been an increase of drug dealers using school children as dealers.

“We recently had a drug turf war at one of the local schools.

”The criminal activity in these settlements create domestic violence, child abuse, sexual abuse and rape, but we are detirmined to put an end to this,” Naidoo said.
