La Lucia littlies make big donation

La Lucia Junior Primary School donates money to the Friends of the Glenashley Library to buy more books for the children's section.

GLENASHLEY Library was abuzz with excitement at the start of National Book Week on Thursday 5 September when La Lucia Junior Primary School pupils visited the library to make a welcome donation.

The pupils held a pre-loved book sale in aid of the Friends of the Glenashley Library programme.

Glenashley Library’s Angela Buccellato thanked the school and the pupils for the R1 000 donation, which will be used to buy books for the children’s section at the library.

Each book bought will get a label, stating that La Lucia Junior Primary School pupils donated money to buy the book.

“The pupils chose a wonderful day to make the donation at is was also the launch of National Book Week. It is estimated that only 14 per cent of South Africans read books often, so this will go a long way to ensuring children read,” Angela added.

Angela showed the children how to make brown paper bag trees, also in line with Arbour Week, followed by making little men out of sweets.

Friends of Glenashley Library

THE Friends of Glenashley Library is a voluntary organisation that raises money for Glenashley Library.

There are only a hand full of libraries in South Africa that have such a volunteer programme.

The Friends of Glenashley Library meets and supports the library with children’s programmes, shelving books and raise extra funds for the library.

Thanks to the fundraising, the library is able to host a craft and storytelling session every Wednesday from 3pm to 4pm for children between three and eight years old.

Entry to the sessions are free, but donations are welcome.

To become a member of the Friends of Glenashley Library, fill in an application form at the library in Lindsay Drive. Subscription for the year is R40 for an entire family or R30 a person. Members enjoy an extended period of borrowing books from the library and don’t have to pay R5 for ordering a nominated best seller book if it’s not available at the library.
