Volunteers bag nearly a ton of rubbish

Durban Beach Cleanup's Natalie Gorven was gobsmacked by the total weight of the bags collected. She had been hoping to total around 200kgs, the average number for her usual events, but the team collected more than half a ton of garbage in just under two hours!

CLEAR skies and spring sunshine prevailed as the 25-strong team, made up of representatives from Fat Baz, Durban Beach Cleanup and concerned locals, split up to collect trash along Glenashley beach.

It didn’t take long before they started lumbering back with bags filled to the brim to collect second and third bags!

Fat Baz’s Kevin Hughes said, “Though this was an incredible effort, it was also a real eye opener for all involved to see the amount of garbage and debris littering this beautiful stretch of beach.

“”In particular we were shocked by the huge amount of polystyrene and glass we found. Our hope is that people start to realise the damage they are doing and become more responsible beach-users. As ocean-lovers, we are keen to take part in more events like this and continue to champion this worthwhile cause.”
