It’s all in the blood for Cameron

NGN speaks to Marshall Security Crusaders flyhalf Cameron Dunlop.

AFTER beginning his rugby career as a flank, the last place Cameron (Cam) Dunlop expected to end up is in the backline. A product of Grey High School, the 23-year-old flyhalf has had a sterling season for the Marshall Crusaders rugby club.

Dunlop believes the club’s meteoric rise, to the top five of the Fidelity Security Moor Cup-Premier Division, has been down to the team’s dogged determination as well as the leadership of head coach, Lodewyk Riekert, and captain, Ronnie Uys.

“This season the team has found its rhythm and we’ve been consistent and solid, both from a fowards and back-line perspective. From battling relegation, to where we are now, has taken a lot of hard work,” he said.

The former Sharks U19 and U21 player has enjoyed a regular starting position and feels he has in some way, come full circle in his rugby career.

“Both my dad and uncle played for the Crusaders. My dad was a flyhalf/centre and my uncle was a loose forward. Both of them were delighted when I told them I was going to be playing for the club. So in a way I have come full circle. The support from the Durban North community and the players have been fantastic, they’ve made me feel right at home,” he said.

Dunlop has already scored three tries this season and has slotted over his fair share of points.

“I’m just enjoying my rugby at the moment and I’m looking forward to helping this team further its aspirations and claim the premier division trophy.”
