Community bubbles with pride at Umgeni clean-up

Dozens of members of the public spent hours collecting litter along the Umgeni River and at the Beachwood Mangroves.

THE Beach Clean-Up Kwazulu-Natal initiative organised by Mt Edgecombe resident, Jacqui Le Roux at the Umgeni River Greenhub was a roaring success.

Dozens of members of the public spent hours collecting litter along the Umgeni River and at the Beachwood Mangroves.

Roxanne Watson, current Miss SA Earth, as well as several regional finalists also volunteered their time towards the initiative. “There is so much natural beauty in KwaZulu-Natal, and it is important that small initiatives such as this one make an effort to conserve our natural resources, as they are likely to facilitate and inspire bigger efforts,” said Watson.

Le Roux hopes to organise similar clean-ups on the first Saturday of each month. The next clean-up will be held at the Durban harbor. Several skilled divers are set to clean the reeves while Le Roux and other members of the public collect litter along the beach and harbor.

“I feel truly blessed and am so thrilled by by the great turnout we had today. It really makes me happy to see so many people taking an interest in the environment,” said Le Roux.
