How to save water in the home and garden

WITH the water shortage we are facing in South Africa, the current heat wave, and the high cost of utilities it makes sense for all householders to do what they can to help save water in homes and garden. Here are some tips to help you save on your water bill and in doing so help to save water and the planet...

Avoid the hose
While it is tempting to use the garden hose while washing the car, or hosing off the paths and pavements, this leads to a lot of water wastage, much of which cannot be reclaimed and reused, with litres running down the side of the road into the stormwater drains. Remember that you are paying for that water and treat it accordingly. While we are having water restrictions in some areas the use of hose pipes is actually not allowed, but getting into the habit of using a bucket of soapy water to wash the car, or a broom or even blower to clear paths will save you money in the long run as well as being kinder to the environment.

Choose plants wisely
Some plants need less water than others to grow successfully. At this time when water is scarce, consider replacing plants that might have died due to water shortages with others that need less water. South African indigenous plants which have had years to adapt to the conditions in our country normally do better in water scarce gardens than exotics which need extra watering to mimic more lush climes
Water precisely
While sprinklers are great for watering large expanses of lawn or large flower-beds, they don’t target specific areas the way hand watering can. Using a watering can to water around plant bases but leave other areas dry also helps to limit weed growth and ensures all the precious water goes where it is most needed. Seep hoses allow water to seep out of holes in the hose, they can be buried under soil or mulch which aids in preventing evaporation and allows you to irrigate rows of plants making it ideal for a vegetable garden. Full loads only Automatic dish and clothing washers should always be used only for full loads of washing to optimise water conservation. Many modern dishwashers today recommend not pre-rinsing dishes because many of the newer machines don’t need it and prerinsing wastes valuable water. If your machine is older or you can’t see yourself not re-rinsing, then consider pre-rinsing a full sink full of dishes as you load the washer using a sink of water rather than running water over the dishes and letting the water drain away.
