Durban North SAPS saddened by officer’s death

Michael Chetty had served the police force for 26 years.

DURBAN North SAPS and members of the North Durban community are mourning the loss of one of the station’s officers. Michael Chetty died on Monday after a heart attack. He served at the police force for 26 years and had only resigned last year from the station. His funeral was held on Wednesday morning and Chetty was laid to rest in Mount Edgecombe.

According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, police spokesman, the station’s members were in mourning.

“He was a warrant officer in the detective branch and served the SAPS for 26 years. He worked in the field unit of the detective branch. Our prayers and thoughts are with his family. He was an asset to the police and will be missed by all who knew him,” he said.

Carol van Tonder, of the Durban North/Umhlanga Crisis Team (DNUCT) also expressed her sadness over the news of Chetty’s passing.

“He worked tirelessly patrolling the streets undercover, often in unmarked vehicles with his team keeping us safe. He was a true gentleman and always had a smile. Condolences to his family, friends and colleagues, a true loss for our family at the station,” she said.
