Woman robbed at uMhlanga N2/M41 interchange

There have been more than 20 cases reported since April last year.

A WOMAN was robbed of her valuables at the N2/M41 interchange in uMhlanga on Tuesday morning. The incident occurred at the traffic lights going towards Gateway. According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, there had been more than 20 cases of theft or smash-and-grabs at this intersection.

The new interchange is set to be complete by April next year.

“This woman had her window open and didn’t notice the suspect until he was right at her window. He snatched her cell phone and ran into the bushes under the bridge. The incident occurred at about 8.45am. We are again appealing to motorists not to leave goods lying on the seats of their cars and to be extremely vigilant when driving through the area. Car floors and seats are not good places to leave items,” he warned.

The video below shows how quickly a smash-and-grab or theft out of your vehicle can occur.

Deokaran also warned residents that there had been a spike in theft out of motor vehicles. There had been seven cases reported this week so far.

“The value of items taken was more than R80 000 in the cases. People are leaving items in their car in plain sight which has given opportunistic criminals a window of opportunity.”
