Mosquito infestation plagues Kenville community

Blocked servitude has become a breeding ground of mosquitoes.

RESIDENTS living in the Kenville area are up in arms over a growing mosquito infestation that has plagued the area for the past six months. Since the heavy rains fell in June this year, Hendon Road residents have had to endure the constant buzzing of mosquitoes due to the stagnation of what used to be a free flowing stream situated behind a house in Hendon Road. What’s more, residents also have to put up with the smell of rotting vegetation and household filth from a nearby illegal dumping site.

Ashok Saikoolal, chairperson of the Kenville/Sea Cow Lake Ratepayers and Residents Association, said there is a massive concentration of adult mosquitoes and larvae. Saikoolal said the matter was raised in a ratepayers’ meeting at the end of last month.

“A resident brought the matter to our attention and we believe this poses a serious health risk. Upon closer inspection by members of the association, it was found that a natural stream that flows behind a house has become restricted. There are also underground cables to the pathway lighting that have been submerged in the water and could result in the electrocution of those who accidentally touch the metal light poles,” Saikoolal said.

The stagnant water completely blocks off a pathway that connects Hendon Road to Knoll Road.

“This pseudo-lake may result in an accidental drowning of a pedestrian who may unknowingly walk into the water especially when the lights are not working. Also small children may find this a good recreation area to play at and may end up drowning,” Saikoolal said.
Bobby Maharajh, the Kenville ward councillor said, “I was shown photographs of what the area looked like and am doing what I can to get proper answers in terms of who is responsible for the cleaning up of water and maintenance of the area. So far, because of the servitude, it would be the residents’ responsibility to clear the area,” he said.

Cllr Maharajh said he will be following up further.
