Jenna honoured by SA Sports Award nod

Ward was in the Sportswoman of the Year category, with Olympic gold medalist, Caster Semenya (the winner on the night) and South African netball player, Phumza Maweni.

MOUNT Edgecombe resident, Jenna Ward said she was honoured to be among the country’s best after being named as a nominee for Sportswoman of the Year at the South Africa Sports Awards.  Ward who had a stellar year representing South Africa in paddling, was among three nominees from the paddling fraternity, including Hank McGregor and Kim Pople.

Ward was in the Sportswoman of the Year category, with Olympic gold medalist, Caster Semenya (the winner on the night) and South African netball player, Phumza Maweni.

“I’d never dreamed that I would be rubbing shoulders with athletes like Wade van Niekerk, Caster and Henri Schoeman. It was such an honour being nominated especially as this was an Olympic year. It’s the first time I was nominated for any sports award, I’ve never been up for a KZN or South African nomination so it’s just amazing,” she said.

Ward’s achievements include finishing third in the K1 U23 world champs, winning the U23 ICF Ocean Racing World Championships in Tahiti and winning silver at the ICF Canoe Marathon World Championships in Brandenburg, Germany.

President of Canoeing South Africa Christo Horn also paid tribute to Ward and her fellow canoeists.

“To have three nominations at such a prestigious event is incredible for our sport and along with Kim, we are also really proud of Hank and Jenna for their respective nominations,” Horn added.
