Elderly uMhlanga resident assaulted in robbery

The robbers were on the scene for 45 minutes before fleeing.

AN uMhlanga resident and his two domestic workers were lucky to survive a 45 minute ordeal at the hands of armed robbers who assaulted him at his home in broad daylight on Tuesday morning. Blue Security managing director, Henk Van Bemmelen, said three armed robbers had ambushed the resident as he pulled into his driveway in Chartwell Drive at around 8am yesterday morning.

“Two suspects had staked out the property earlier in the day apparently awaiting for the resident to return home. When he pulled into the driveway in his vehicle the two men walked in behind his car onto the property before the gates closed,” he said.

“They held up the resident at gunpoint in his garage before forcing him into his home where they assaulted him on the back of his head with their firearms. They tied up the victim and his two domestic workers. The pair opened the gate to let in a third armed suspect about ten minutes later,” he said.

Van Bemmelen said the robbers, one who was wearing a blue overall jacket and grey trousers and another who was wearing an orange t-shirt and jeans, tied up the resident and searched the home for valuables.

“The robbers were on the scene for 45 minutes before fleeing, carrying bags on their backs. When we examined the CCTV street surveillance camera footage later the suspects could be seen jumping into a taxi.  Netcare 911 paramedics attended the scene and transported the victim to hospital,” he said.

Van Bemmelen said R20 000 cash, a wallet, digital cameras, binoculars, jewellery and watches were reported stolen.
