City beefs ups pier security, urges fishermen to abide by rules

New look at the Virginia Pier as City erects barbed wire and fence to keep fishermen out.

THE City has urged fishermen to stop tampering with the barricade built around Virginia Pier following a spate of drownings from the pier. Last month alone, three fishermen drowned after allegedly falling off the pier.

The municipality, who initially put up a metal gate which was chained to the pier with disclaimer signs has upped the security. Now, the pier is surrounded by barbed wire and wire fencing.

Various railings around the pier have been taken down while the City works on repairing and replacing items.

eThekwini spokesperson, Tozi Mthethwa, said they are currently finalising the necessary processes for the installation of new railings but could not give a date as to when it would be completed.

“We urge residents to stop removing the barricade that was put up in the interim, and we prohibit fishermen from fishing at night when the chances of drowning are high. The City is aware of the concerns raised by fishermen and we have had numerous engagements with the fraternity dating back to 2010.

“We are a caring City and we prioritise the well-being of all our residents. We also recognise that the fishing industry is a booming one, and we have not infringed upon the rights of our fishermen,” she said.
