Get on ‘board’! Mzanzi Monopoly is here

Purchase your favourite South African landmarks in the new Monopoly Mzansi game.

SOUTH Africans are finally able to play a ‘local is lekker’ version of the timeless board game, Monopoly following the launch of the Monopoly Mzansi edition.

The latest version of the game features 22 South African locations and four transport stations, including King Shaka International Airport.

Some of the most iconic properties gamers can buy includes, uMhlanga’s Oyster Box Hotel, Johannesburg’s Gold Reef City and Cape Town’s Table Mountain. The Oyster Box is the only hotel that garnered a coveted spot on the popular game.

Hasbro, the world’s largest toy, game and entertainment company, recently launched the new edition of the game at Nelson Mandela Square. So far over 300 000 sets have been released.

Earlier in the year the public was given the opportunity to vote for their favourite locations.

“Research was done and we provided a list of about 50 of the top locations across the country and from there the public voted for their favourite,” said Belinda Maritz, a Hasbro representative.

“There have been so many street name changes and new iconic locations that have changed the face of the country. This inspired us to create something proudly South African – something unique to us and that we all can relate to,” she added.

Besides the new locations, the game has remained unchanged, she said. It still features the Chance Cards as well the original Scottie dog, iron and race car game pieces.

“We are thrilled to be included on the board, especially since we were voted on by the South African public. It is one of the most beloved games as it enables every one of us to be a millionaire for a few hours,” said Wayne Coetzer, general manager of The Oyster Box.
