Police nab alleged hijacker in Glen Anil

The suspect was arrested outside a service station with two weapons in his possession, after police received a tip off of a planned robbery.

POLICE made a breakthrough in the string of hijackings that have plagued the Greenwood Park policing precinct on Monday when they linked a suspected business robber to an armed robbery and hijacking in Inanda.

The suspect, said W/O Leon Audh, spokesman for the Greenwood Park SAPS, was nabbed in August, after Det W/O Sanjay Arunjeeth received a tip-off of an alleged planned robbery at a service station in Glen Anil.

Yesterday detectives at the TRIO crimes department (which includes serious crimes, such as hijackings, house and business robberies) were able to link the suspect to the two cases that rocked the Inanda area earlier this year.

Back in August, officer Arunjeeth spotted a white Toyota Yaris parked on Alamanda Road.

“The detective then, without hesitation, tactically approached the driver, identified himself as a police officer and searched him and the motor vehicle. Upon searching the suspect, Arunjeeth had found a Star 9mm-firearm in the driver’s possession and also .38 special revolver in the motor vehicle,” said Audh.

The serial numbers of both weapons had been filed off.

“The suspect was then detained at the Greenwood Park station and charged with illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. The firearms and the Toyota Yaris was seized by the detective and handed in at the station. The docket was then handed to our TRIO Crimes detectives,” he added.

The suspect will appear at the Durban Magistrates’ Court today, and Greenwood Park detectives will be opposing bail.
